Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD)
12 - 14 November 2008 (Baguio City, Philippines)
From 12-14 November 2008, the United Nations University - Institute of Advanced Studies Traditional Knowledge Initiative (UNU-IAS TKI), with Tebtebba (Indigenous Peoples’ International Centre for Policy Research and Education), the UN-REDD Programme (UNDP, UNEP and FAO) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity held a meeting titled "Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD)" in Baguio City, Philippines.
The global meeting followed on from the South East Asia Indigenous Peoples Regional Consultation on REDD held on 9-11 November 2008 also in Baguio City, Philippines.
The Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on REDD sought to bring together around 30 international indigenous leaders to:
- Review the current level of involvement of indigenous communities in the global debate on REDD, and compile views on related challenges and opportunities;
- Consider strategies for indigenous coalitions to effectively engage in international REDD processes;
- Develop a capacity-building strategy for indigenous peoples; and
- Consider the need for additional tools for influencing the development of REDD schemes.
Participants at the meeting adopted the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities' Global Strategy on REDD (adopted at the meeting)... on 14 November 2008.
